Detroit Lions Report: Is Pac Man Jones Coming to Detroit?

There are some rumors flying that troubled defensive back Pac Man Jones could be coming to Detroit. Jones has ties to Head Coach Jim Schwartz from his days as a younger player in Tennessee.

This would be a huge mistake in my opinion. Last I heard he was trying out for the Canadian League. Send him back up there.

Detroit Tigers Report: Dontrelle Willis to Start Today

Dontrelle Willis is scheduled to start today for the Tigers as they face the Houston Astros as they continue spring training. Dontrelle has been on shaky ground in Detroit since coming over in the Miguel Cabrera trade 2 years ago. He’s had issues with his confidence and its showed in his pitching as he’s only made a few starts for the Tigers.

However, Dontrelle is pitching better this spring and lets hope he keeps it up. With Max Scherzer scuffling in his starts since coming over from Arizona in a trade for Edwin Jackson, the Tigers could use some insurance for their numbers 3 and 4 in the starting pitching rotation.

Detroit Red Wings Report: Red Wings 2 Calgary 1

The Red Wings just put some life back into a season of disappointments. The Wings took over sole possesion of the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a win 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

This was just a huge, much needed win for the Wings. Tomas Holmstrom deflected a Johan Franzen Slapshot with 1:19 to go in the third period after a key penalty kill to seal the win for Detroit. It was Holmstrom’s 20th goal in a season where he’s battled through injuries.

Jimmy Howard played well again stopping 23 shots and allowing just one goal. Pavel Datsyuk also added a goal to continue playing his part in the Red Wings Playoff Push.

Is there a possible showdown looming with the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs? The Blackhawks have been scuffling a bit recently and are doing a lot of whining about a an Alex Ovechkin hit on Defensman Brian Campbell that resulted in a Campbell broken collar bone.

Detroit Lions Report: Lions Acquire Backup QB Shaun Hill

The Detroit Lions filled a need at backup quarterback today by trading a 2011 Seventh Round Draft Pick to the San Francisco 49ers for Quarterback Shaun Hill. Hill spent a couple years with the Lions’ Offensive Scott Linehan in Minnesota back on 2002. Hill recently went 10-6 as a starter with the 49ers before being replaced by Alex Smith.

Recently the 49ers signed David Carr to fill their backup spot.

Detroit Red Wings Report: Wings win 5 out of 7

The Red Wings have won 5 out of 7 since the Olympic break. Brian Rafalski’s power-play goal 31 seconds into overtime gave Detroit a 3-2 win over Buffalo at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night. This put the wings back into the 8th playoff spot and sets up a huge game in Calgary tonight.

The Wings and Flames are battling for the last spot in the Western Conference and tonight will be a showdown that could put one of the teams ahead for good. Lets hope the defense in front of our net continues to improve as the playoffs draw closer.

Detroit Tigers Report: Joe Nathan Injured

Tests on Nathan’s right throwing elbow of Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan have revealed a significant tear in the ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that could require season-ending Tommy John surgery. Nathan’s 246 saves over six seasons are the most in the majors during that span.

What this could be mean for the Tigers remains to be seen whether the Tommy John is necessary. It’s conceivable that the Twins could have a fill in for Nathan in John Rauch, but let’s face facts here; John Rauch is no Joe Nathan. The Tigers have historically been shut down and out by Nathan’s dominating late game heroics.

Although no one likes to see anyone hurt, one can’t help but wonder if this could swing the American League Central more towards the Tigers or White Sox. Joe Nathan may not need the surgery, so we can only wait and see as the Twins wait out the news of how he’s feeling in the next couple weeks.

Detroit Lions Report: Lions Sign DB Jonathon Wade and Re-sign TE Will Heller

The Detroit Lions are still making progress in the 2010 Free Agency market. They have now signed Defensive Back Jonathon Wade to a one year contract and Re-signed Tight End Will Heller.

In other news, the Lions cut Defensive End Dewayne White and signed Wide Receiver/Special Teams Player Brian Clark. Dewayne White has struggled with injuries the last few years and he became expendable with the signing of Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Detroit Tigers Report: Scherzer gets Rocked in Spring Training

For his second straight appearance, Max Scherzer got rocked. He gave up 5 runs in the first inning, got yanked and had control issues again. In an earlier post this Spring, I mentioned concerns about the starters in the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots. I know it’s only Spring Training, but without at least a solid 3rd starter, you can forget the Playoffs or battling the White Sox or Twins for the division.

On a side note, Dontrelle Willis has been ok in his outings in Lakeland, FL. He’s been better than both Bonderman and Scherzer. I’m not getting my hopes up, but the guy has always had serious talent. Maybe this year he can eat up some innings and start earning that big contract?

Detroit Lions Report: Lions will trade for CB Chris Houston

Sounds like the Lions will move a sixth round draft pick to Atlanta for Defensive Back Chris Houston. Houston’s been a starter for three years in Atlanta. With the acquisition of Dunta Robinson the Falcons felt that Houston was expendable in order obtain a pick in the 6th round coming up in April’s draft from the Lions.

The Lions had previously released Phillip Buchanon and will let Will James and Anthony Henry test the Free Agent Market.

Detroit Red Wings Battle Back to Beat Chicago 5-4

Huge win for Mike Babcock and the Wings. In a game that looked like trouble for the Red Wings after they fell down 2-0 in the first quarter, the Red Wings put up a fight and came back to win 5-4. Despite a Hat Trick from Chicago’s Andrew Ladd, the Wings stormed back in the second to post four early goals in the period.

Maybe this win over the NHL’s best team will get us jump started for the playoff push. I don’t look forward to spring without Red Wing Playoff Hockey.
