Detroit Red Wings Battle Back to Beat Chicago 5-4
Posted by Joe in Detroit Red Wings Hockey on March 8th, 2010
Huge win for Mike Babcock and the Wings. In a game that looked like trouble for the Red Wings after they fell down 2-0 in the first quarter, the Red Wings put up a fight and came back to win 5-4. Despite a Hat Trick from Chicago’s Andrew Ladd, the Wings stormed back in the second to post four early goals in the period.
Maybe this win over the NHL’s best team will get us jump started for the playoff push. I don’t look forward to spring without Red Wing Playoff Hockey.
Babcock declares Chris Osgood his playoff starter
Posted by Joe in Detroit Red Wings Hockey on April 4th, 2009
Update from Friday’s practice: This comes as no surprise, but Wings coach Mike Babcock made it official by saying Chris Osgood will be his starting goaltender in the playoffs. Osgood will start Sunday against Minnesota, as the Wings, who are pretty much locked into second place in the Western Conference, try to snap a three-game losing streak.
Hossa scores, but leaves hurt vs. Sharks

The Wings looked strong tonight against the first place San Jose Sharks, but Marian Hossa left the game with an undisclosed injury. He scored a goal, and leads the team with an impressive 34 goals. Ty Conklin looked strong in net as he continues to put pressure on Chris Osgood, who will start in goal this Friday. The Red Wings did not announce the details of the injury yet, and I’ll post as soon as I find out. Let hope for the best; Hossa’s been very strong this year and looks like the stud player we thought he was going to be.
Redwings: Jimmy Howard to start, Osgood given 10 days off
Posted by Joe in Detroit Red Wings Hockey on February 21st, 2009
Well, well, well, we’ve not seen Jimmy Howard in a while…
Chris Osgood was given 10 days off by the Wings to clear his head and re-gain his game. Huh? Yikes, I guess Chris has not been on his game at all this year. After leading us to the cup last year, Osgood has really fallen off and he’s had the worst season of his career.
It sounded like earlier in the year, there were a lot of people blaming our defense.; despite missed time by Brad Stewart and Nick Lidstrom, our defense has held up well. In my opion, Osgood has stunk this year – I don’t think there’s any denying it. Despite what Pat Caputo (97.1 FM – The Ticket – Detroit) would tell you, Chris Osgood needs to go. Hello Ty Conklin – and now Jimmy Howard??
Ozzie, if you’re the hall of famer as Cuputo constantly claims you are, lets get your shiz together and start playing some quality goal.
Zetterberg Signs New Deal
Posted by Joe in Detroit Red Wings Hockey on January 30th, 2009
The Red Wings are awesome.
Henrick Zetterberg signed the longest and most lucrative contract deal in Red Wings history. Zetterberg signed a cap friendly deal for an astounding 12 years worth $73 million. This will keep in Detroit until he’s 40 years old! The deal works out at $6.08 million a year against our cap – an extremely affordable figure for such a dynamic forward.
Zetterberg has been a stallwort with the Wings since arriving in the 2000-01 season and helped us with the Stanley cup in 2007-08. He is adept at controlling the pucks, he’s good defensively and he can put the puck in the net and has scored 80 plus points twice in his career. He had a career high 45 goals last year. ”Hank” is currently out nursing a bad back.
More than the value of being able to lock down Hank Z, this signing re-inforces my beleif that this is the best run pro club in Detroit, the NHL and for that matter – all of professional sports. The fact that guys like Zetterberg and Hossa would sign for less than their market value speaks volumes about their coaches, management and owner. Even mor than that, I can’t figure out how they keep churning out players from their draft picks. Their skill at finding both high, mid and late round picks that keep turning out to be solid hockey players has been unmatched. I can only think of the San Antonio Spurs as a comparison.

Datsyuk, Lidstrom penalized by NHL for skipping All-Star weekend
Posted by Joe in Detroit Red Wings Hockey on January 24th, 2009
In the NHL’s and Gary Bettman’s infinite wisdom, they have decided to suspend Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk, who will miss the All-Star Game because of injury, for the first game back after the break. This mean’s they’ll be out for Tuesday’s game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets. Lidstrom is bothered by an ankle injury that won’t heal completely and Datsyuk has an issue with his hip. Lidstrom has appeared in 10 straight All-Star games as the game’s premier defensive player for over a decade. This was the Datsyuk’s third All-Star selection, for the game’s best defensive forward.
Does Bettman think that anyone even watches the NHL All-Star Game? Is it THAT important? I could see if the player just did not want to show up, or needed to go to Cabo instead; but, both Red Wings players have legitimate injuries and I can understand their not wanting to go. Even more so than that, I think this should come down to a fine. If the Red Wings come down to a race to get to the playoffs and finished a couple of points out – this would be an absolutely ridiculous reason. They should fine the players who miss the game if its something that they have to go to.
The bottom line is that the NHL All-Star game is awful. There’s nothing good about it: no fights, no goaltending, no defense.
